How to apply to support the unaccompanied children response

Due to the substantial increase in the number of unaccompanied children and families along the southern border, HHS was given authority to hire staff to process, shelter and place unaccompanied children with family members or sponsors in the United States.

HHS is actively recruiting and hiring persons to fill temporary positions through the Schedule A Hiring Authority in the response the Unaccompanied Children challenge at the border. HHS offers a variety of jobs and competitive salaries across the U.S. in support of this response.

Unaccompanied Minors Excepted Service Hiring Authority

The U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM) has authorized the use of excepted-service, temporary appointments under 5 CFR 213.3102(i)(3) to address the need for hiring additional staff in response to the Unaccompanied Children challenge at the border.

HHS is using the Schedule A Hiring Authority to fill temporary excepted service positions at any grade level for up to one (1) year that are directly related to unaccompanied minors response. 

  • Appointments may extend up to one (1) additional year. 
  • Appointments can be made through December 31, 2022.
  • While being eligible for a Schedule A appointment will help you in the noncompetitive process, it will not guarantee you a job.

Interview Process

HHS makes reasonable accommodations for applicants to provide full access to the application process. During the interview process, the hiring official will ask you questions about your job qualifications and how you would perform the essential functions of the job. You are encouraged to present your qualifications in a positive manner which emphasizes abilities and assets. Sometimes an applicant will choose to anticipate and address job related questions about ways his or her disability may affect performance of critical duties, roles, and responsibilities of the job.
