Their challenge: Do what they can in 24 hours to help the federal government better understand the nature of the opioid epidemic, and identify ways we might begin to ease it.

When I came to The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) in 2011, I pulled the results from the latest Federal Employee Viewpoint Survey - a survey of federal employee satisfaction. I discovered that CMS was in the bottom quintile for the entire Federal government. My office, the Center for Clinical Standards and Quality (CCSQ), was at the bottom of CMS.

HRSA embarked upon this federal challenge to address the "Word Gap," the large difference in exposure to language for children from low-income families compared to children from high-income families. By age four, children from low-income families have heard 30 million fewer words than those from higher-income families. This affects how young children develop language skills, their performance in school, and eventually their success in life.
