Connect National Provider Organizations to Multiple Immunization Information Systems, or IIS

Goal of IZ Gateway Connect

Large national provider organizations like the Veterans Health Administration, Department of Defense, Indian Health Service and the Federal Bureau of Prisons are currently unable to exchange patient immunization data with IIS, or do so in limited one-off connections. The current process to exchange immunization data with multiple IIS can be burdensome - the provider organizations must make multiple IIS connections through disparate onboarding and legal processes that vary from each IIS jurisdiction. These connectivity issues lead to gaps in accurate vaccination data in the IIS and could lead to potential vaccination errors due to incomplete patient vaccination history.

The Immunization (IZ) Gateway Connect component enables large national provider organizations to report and query immunization data with multiple IIS. Connect reduces burden to both national provider organizations and IIS by streamlining the onboarding process through connection to a single, centralized hub and offering centralized testing procedures.

Benefits of Connect

  • More complete and accurate vaccine information is available from national provider organizations and non-traditional vaccinators (organizations that are not currently sharing with IIS)
  • Reduce burden on provider organizations by providing onboarding concierge services to help provider organizations navigate local policy and technology variations per IIS jurisdiction
  • Centralized onboarding services, quality assurance and testing make it easier for both the provider and the IIS

Connect: Call to Action for COVID-19 Response

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Department of Health and Human Services highly encourage all IIS to join IZ Gateway Connect. Participation in this project component is essential for receiving data from national providers, non-traditional vaccinators, and mass vaccination applications that will be crucial sources of information for a COVID-19 mass vaccination campaign.
