On September 21, 2023, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Xavier Becerra participated in proceedings at the United Nations in New York, NY as part of the General Assembly’s annual meeting of global leaders. The Secretary led the U.S. delegation to the High-Level Meeting on Universal Health Coverage, addressing the plenary on behalf of the United States, and held two bilateral meetings, with Israel and Poland.
At the High-Level Meeting (HLM) on Universal Health Coverage, Secretary Becerra shared the United States Government’s support for Universal Health Coverage (UHC), joining the global community in urging action to get back on track in all critical UHC areas and restoring essential health services to levels better than before the COVID-19 pandemic. The Secretary spoke about how UHC would improve outcomes and wellbeing on a range of health issues, including, but not limited to: reproductive, maternal, newborn, and child health, routine childhood immunization, infectious diseases, including HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis, mental health, and non-communicable diseases, such as diabetes.
Secretary Becerra also participated in bilateral meetings with Israel and Poland to discuss opportunities for enhancing health cooperation, advance work on several key health security projects, and improve the world’s collective preparedness and response efforts.
HHS Assistant Secretary for Global Affairs Loyce Pace also participated in the UN General Assembly HLMs on Universal Health Coverage, on Tuberculosis, and on Pandemic Prevention, Preparedness and Response, and in critical health discussion across the week, joined by other United States government health leaders including Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Director Dr. Mandy Cohen. Assistant Secretary Pace addressed the plenary of the HLM on the Fight Against Tuberculosis and a panel of the HLM on UHC on behalf of the United States, held bilateral meetings with key counterparts, and represented the Department in events on UHC, TB, pandemic prevention, preparedness and response, sexual and reproductive health and rights, and on health and climate.
