Federal Employee Viewpoint Survey

Each year the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) conducts the Federal Employee Viewpoint Survey (FEVS), a confidential online survey of its employees to assess how well we are doing in providing a positive, healthy, and innovative work environment. The FEVS, administered by the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) contains questions designed to measure employees' feelings and attitudes in topic areas such as talent development, leadership, management/supervision, knowledge management, performance culture, employee engagement, and other areas important to creating an effective work environment. The results are used to improve HHS and our Divisions by providing information to help us build on our strengths and address our weaknesses.

2020 FEVS

In 2020, OPM shortened the number of core survey questions in order to accommodate additional questions related to the COVID-19 pandemic. The 2020 FEVS was administered from September 21, 2020 - November 2, 2020. During this open period, 50,393 FEVS-eligible employees responded to the survey for an overall HHS response rate of 70.6 percent.

FEVS Engagement Score

The HHS employee engagement score was 76.5 in 2020, which is an increase of 3.0 percentage points from 2019. The engagement score has increased by 10.3 percentage points since 2014.
