Areas of Responsibility

ONS's responsibilities include integrating intelligence and security information into HHS policy and operational decisions; assessing, anticipating, and warning of potential security threats to the Department and our national security; and providing policy guidance on and managing the OS implementation of the Department's security, intelligence, and counterintelligence programs.

ONS's programs include national security adjudication, classified national security information management, secure compartmented information facilities management, communications security, safeguarding and sharing of classified information, cyber threat intelligence, and counterintelligence.

Intelligence & Analysis

The Intelligence and Analysis Division (IAD) is responsible for providing intelligence and security information in support of HHS policy and operational decisions and assessing, anticipating, and warning of potential security threats to the Department and our national security. IAD provides classified information management, safeguarding and sharing of classified information, and cyber threat intelligence. In addition, IAD conducts activities to identify, deter, and protect HHS personnel, information technology, and critical assets from insider threats.

Personnel Security

The Personnel Security Division (PERSEC) provides Department-wide leadership, coordination, policy, and oversight for National Security and Suitability processing and adjudications, OPM, DCSA, and DNI quarterly reporting, and manages and oversees the HHS Drug-Free Workplace Program (DFWP). PERSEC has responsibility as the Special Security Officer for administering all classified collateral and sensitive compartmented information including communications security.

Security and Business Services

The Security and Business Services Division (SBSD) provides customer focused solutions and leadership in support of ONS’s business and administrative operations.
