Locke Karriker, DVM, MS, DACVPM; Dr. Douglas and Ann Gustafson Professor for Teaching Excellence in Veterinary Medicine and Director, Swine Medicine Education Center, Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine, Ames, Iowa.
Dr. Locke Karriker is a Professor in the Department of Veterinary Diagnostic and Production Animal Medicine (VDPAM). His position is a mix of teaching, research and professional practice activities focused on improving and advancing swine medicine and the judicious use of antimicrobial therapy. This includes serving as Director of the Swine Medicine Education Center (SMEC) which has taught swine medicine to students from 31 universities globally, provides an average of 98,054 student contact hours annually, and has impacted approximately 52% of the national swine herd through research collaboration, co-hosted student interns, professional veterinary practice, professional program instruction and diagnostic consultation. He developed and teaches the only food animal focused pharmacology clinical rotation course in the United States. Dr. Karriker is active on national committees committed to the judicious use of antimicrobials including the Pharmaceutical Issues Committee of the American Association of Swine Veterinarians and the Producer, Public Health and Workplace Safety Committee of the National Pork Board. Dr. Karriker is one of the editors of the essential swine medicine reference book, Diseases of Swine (10th and 11th editions) and is the lead author of the “Drug Pharmacology, Therapy and Prophylaxis” chapter. His research activities are focused on swine disease diagnosis and treatment especially advancing knowledge on pharmacology and welfare, further characterizing disease conditions, and assessing new intervention strategies.
