OIDP provides strategic direction and coordination on a number of topics related to infectious disease. 

Antibiotic Resistance

The rise of antibiotic-resistant bacteria represents a serious threat to public health and the economy. To support and evaluate the implementation of U.S. government activities, OIDP leads the Presidential Advisory Council on Combating Antibiotic-Resistant Bacteria (PACCARB).

Blood and Tissue Safety and Availability

Ensuring that safe blood and tissue products are available is important to the health and wellbeing of Americans. OIDP coordinates HHS blood and tissue safety and availability activities and manages the Advisory Committee on Blood and Tissue Safety and Availability.

HIV and AIDS

Approximately 1.1 million people in the United States are living with HIV today. OIDP spearheads the federal HIV/AIDS response through a number of activities: Ending the HIV Epidemic: A Plan for America Initiative, HIV.gov, Minority HIV/AIDS Fund, National HIV/AIDS Strategy, and the Presidential Advisory Council on HIV/AIDS.

Sexually Transmitted Infections

Rates of sexually transmitted infections have reached all-time highs in recent years. In response to this growing public health epidemic, OIDP is coordinating the first-ever STI Federal Action Plan.  

Tick-Borne Disease Working Group

Tick-borne diseases are a serious public health problem. To advance interagency coordination and research on this topic, OIDP leads the Tick-Borne Disease Working Group.

Vaccines and Immunizations

Vaccines are one of the greatest public health achievements. OIDP provides strategic leadership and coordination of vaccine and immunization activities through the National Vaccine Advisory Committee, National Vaccine Plan, and hhs.gov/immunization.

Viral Hepatitis

Viral hepatitis is a serious public health problem and we are losing ground against it. To stop the spread of viral hepatitis, OIDP directs the National Viral Hepatitis Action Plan.
