Federal Participation and Input
The Vaccines National Strategic Plan 2021-2025 (Vaccine Plan) development was guided by the Office of Infectious Disease and HIV/AIDS Policy (OIDP) and Office of the Assistant Secretary for Health. It included engaging federal leadership, experts, and non-federal partners to identify topics and develop recommendations to enhance all aspects of vaccines and vaccination, including research and development, safety, vaccine knowledge and confidence, increased access and use of routinely recommended vaccines, and global cooperation.
The federal Interagency Vaccine Working Group was organized to set the vision, goals, objectives, and strategies for the Vaccine Plan. The National Vaccine Advisory Committee, at the request of the Assistant Secretary for Health in March 2019, developed recommendations to guide the development of the Vaccine Plan.
Public Participation and Input
The Vaccine Plan was informed by public input collected through an announcement in the Federal Register to develop a national strategy on vaccination and telephone interviews with 65 leading experts in vaccine science, program management, policy, and advocacy. OIDP used the feedback to shape the vision and goals in the Vaccine Plan. The draft Vaccines National Strategic Plan 2021–2025 was also subject to public comments through another announcement in the Federal Register. Additional feedback from stakeholders and the public was used to prepare the final draft of the Vaccine Plan. Details on how the plan was developed can be found in Appendix A of the Vaccine Plan.
OIDP also released national strategic plans for viral hepatitis, sexually transmitted infections, and HIV between December 2020 and January 2021. Learn more about the Vaccines Plan or download the plan to read it.
