Michael F. Iademarco, MD, MPH serves as Rear Admiral and Assistant Surgeon General in the U. S. Public Health Service and as the Deputy Assistant Secretary for Science and Medicine (DAS-S & M) in the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Health. In this role, he serves as senior advisor to the Assistant Secretary for Health on program priorities covering the full range of public health activities within the HHS Office of the Assistant Secretary for Health to help lead Americans to healthier lives. He also provides direction and coordination of activities pertaining to a range of emerging and existing public health and science issues across OASH including direct oversight of the Office of the Chief Medical Officer and the InnovationX team.
From 2014 - 2022, he served as the director of CDC’s Center for Surveillance, Epidemiology, and Laboratory Services, focusing on workforce development and laboratory and data systems. A major part of his career has centered on tuberculosis, surveillance, laboratory science, guidelines development, and global health, including two 2-year tours as Health Attaché to the U.S. Mission in Vietnam. Dr. Iademarco obtained his undergraduate degrees from Franklin & Marshall College in mathematics and chemistry, medical degree from the University of Virginia, and master’s degree in public health from Saint Louis University. He trained clinically and in research at Temple University Hospital in internal medicine and Barnes-Jewish Hospital in pulmonary medicine. Prior to joining CDC in 1998, he was a physician-scientist research faculty member of Washington University in St. Louis. He served as an attending physician at the Atlanta Veterans Administration Medical Center Medical Intensive Care Unit for 18 years affiliated as an adjunct faculty member of Emory University in the School of Medicine and Rollins School of Public Health.
