Job Hazard Analysis

Federal Occupational Health (FOH) has a long and successful history of serving federal agencies with their health and safety needs. Every worker should be as safe as he or she can be. Job hazard analysis (JHA) identifies and analyzes hazards associated with the performance of various individual job tasks with the goal to make each worker as safe as possible.

"One of the biggest advantages of FOH is eliminating the need for multiple contracts all over the country. FOH provides services to our 50+ offices nationally. They coordinate onsite visits and perform direct consultations with our employees, who appreciate the one-on-one contact."
-    Chief, Agency Safety, Food and Drug Administration (FDA)

Program Overview

The intent of JHA is identifying necessary training, equipment, and monitoring to safely perform job tasks in accordance with applicable workplace safety regulations. FOH's Environmental Health and Safety Services (EHSS) can help provide a thorough JHA program that can contribute to reduced workplace injuries, incidents, and related lost worker time and productivity.

The JHA provides findings and recommendations associated with each job task. Findings may include recommendations for personal protective equipment (PPE) and other protective measures, such as foot and eye protection, protective hearing devices (earplugs, muffs), hard hats, respirators, gloves, and full body suits. Specific operating procedures are recorded on the JHA analysis forms.

Hazard Analysis

Hazard identification is essential for maintaining the safety and health of employees. Environmental contaminants, physical hazards, as well as water- and food-borne hazards, must be properly identified so that personnel can perform their jobs safely.
FOH's EHSS professionals will perform inspections, identify hazards, and assist with their control. FOH support services include:

  • Air quality monitoring
  • Food safety inspections
  • PPE determination, training, and supplies
  • Water quality inspections

Training

As hazards are detected and identified, FOH staff will ensure that management and employees receive targeted and general safety briefings, unique to each situation or hazardous condition. Safety training topics may include:

  • Confined spaces
  • Energized areas (e.g., electric wires or cables)
  • General hazard awareness
  • Hazardous atmospheres
  • Hazardous exposure (e.g., hazardous liquids and solids)
  • Respiratory protection (e.g., asbestos, silica dust)
  • Water- and food-borne hazards
