U.S.-Mexico Border Atlas of Infectious Diseases

Description: The U.S.-Mexico Border Atlas of Infectious Diseases will include information from the Nationally Notifiable Diseases Surveillance System (NNDSS) on incidence of nationally notifiable and emerging infectious diseases including other relevant indicators for the U.S.-Mexico Border Region. Initial focus will be on infectious diseases included in the Healthy Border 2020 Objectives: Tuberculosis, HIV/AIDS, gonorrhea, congenital syphilis, hepatitis A and B, and bacterial enteric diseases (e.g., listeriosis, non-typhoid Salmonellosis, vibriosis). For the Healthy Border 2020 report, gonorrhea and congenital syphilis rates for the border region will be available by July 2020.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) collaborates with the Council of State and Territorial Epidemiologists to determine which conditions reported to local, state, and territorial public health departments are nationally notifiable. Local, state, and territorial public health departments work with healthcare providers, laboratories, hospitals, and other partners to obtain the information needed to monitor, control, and prevent the occurrence and spread of about 120 health conditions. Health departments participating in NNDSS voluntarily submit case notification data to the CDC Division of Health Informatics and Surveillance (DHIS) and also submit some data directly to CDC programs. The DHIS supports NNDSS by receiving, securing, processing, and providing nationally notifiable infectious diseases data to disease-specific CDC programs.
