The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office on Women’s Health (OWH) today awarded nine cooperative agreements totaling approximately $2 million per year to organizations that support colleges and universities in their efforts to prevent sexual assault on their campuses. The College Sexual Assault Policy and Prevention Initiative provides three years of funding to increase awareness of sexual assault on college campuses and implement successful prevention policies. The initiative also supports the implementation and evaluation of the recommendations from the White House Task Force on Campus Sexual Assault – Not Alone and It's On Us campaigns.

“This Administration has remained committed to ensuring that college campuses are safe spaces for every student, and ending campus sexual assault is an important part of that effort,” said Karen B. DeSalvo, M.D., acting assistant secretary for health. “These awards provide an opportunity for colleges and universities to work with student advocates, faculty and staff, and policymakers to administer prevention strategies to end sexual violence.”

Those awarded will collaborate with and provide technical assistance to organizations in positions to influence policy at post-secondary schools (colleges, universities, technical schools, community college and trade schools). The organizations selected to participate are:

  • Futures Without Violence, San Francisco, California
  • Georgia Independent College Association Inc., Atlanta, Georgia
  • Guam Coalition Against Sexual Assault & Family Violence, Hagatna, Guam
  • Indiana Coalition to End Sexual Assault, Indianapolis, Indiana
  • University of Kansas Center for Research Inc., Lawrence, Kansas
  • University of New Hampshire, Durham, New Hampshire
  • North Carolina Coalition Against Sexual Assault, Raleigh, North Carolina
  • Texas Women’s University, Denton, Texas
  • Men Can Stop Rape, Washington, D.C.

“We see this program as a significant step toward our office’s efforts to prevent violence against women,” said Nancy C. Lee., deputy assistant secretary for health-women’s health and director of OWH. “The work from this program is essential to strengthening violence prevention policies that can be sustained on college campuses beyond this initiative.”
