NIOSH Nexus

Helping NIOSH employees make the connection of who does what where.

Executive Summary

Information sharing and knowledge management are not new challenges for government employees. However, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health’s (NIOSH) distribution of 13 divisions across 8 geographic locations and 4 time zones adds to the challenge. NIOSH also has multiple internal websites with different types and levels of information. Over 50 employees told the team that they spend too much time and energy trying to find answers to questions and connections to people outside of their division. NIOSH Nexus proposes a person-centered intranet portal that includes an enhanced people search, standardized division descriptions, a searchable listing of research projects, and an interactive organizational chart. These features were explored and tested throughout the Ignite Accelerator. The team continues to refine and test the prototype. When successfully deployed, NIOSH Nexus will address employees’ core pain point: the need to quickly and easily find colleagues and information.
