National Academies of Sciences public meeting: Examination of Integration of Opioid and Infectious Disease Prevention Efforts in Select Programs.

Summary:
Registration open for the June 27-28, 2019 public meeting on the integration of opioid and infectious disease prevention features speakers from diverse programs.

The opioid epidemic has led to alarming increases in opioid use disorders, injection drug use, overdose deaths, and infectious diseases that are life-threatening and add to rapidly rising health care costs. This epidemic and its consequences have affected many people, primarily young men and women, as well as their infants in communities across the United States.

In March of 2018 the National Academies of Science Engineering and Medicine (NASEM) hosted the Office of Infectious Disease and HIV/AIDS Policy (OIDP)/Office on Women’s Health (OMH)-sponsored workshop on the intersections of the opioid crisis and infectious diseases. In this workshop a number of action steps were identified to address this public health issue. One of these steps was to further expand integration of opioid and infectious disease prevention services.

On June 27 and 28, 2019 the Committee on the Examination of the Integration of Opioid and Infectious Disease Prevention Efforts in Select Programs will hold a public session. This session will feature invited speakers from a variety of programs currently providing integrated services to learn more about and assess the extent to which opioid and infectious disease prevention programs are integrating services.

This event is free, both days will be viewable via webcast, and the June 28 session will be open to the public at the National Academy of Sciences Building in Washington, D.C.
