Simplified Primary Care Guidance Available for HBV Screening and HCV Treatment

Summary:
These resources provide simplified, up-to-date, and readily accessible guidance for primary care medical providers regarding HBV screening and HCV treatment.

The National Viral Hepatitis Action Plan highlights the importance of integrated models of care that provide viral hepatitis services at the same location as other key services, like primary care. These integrated approaches have shown to be effective in identifying and linking individuals with chronic viral hepatitis to care. To that end, there are two new resources to enable primary care providers to better address hepatitis in their patients.

Hepatitis B Screening

With funding support from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), the University of Washington National Hepatitis Training Center provides free tools via their website, https://www.hepatitisb.uw.edu/. A new addition to their site is Hepatitis B Management: Guidance for the Primary Care Provider. The guide provides simplified, up-to-date, and readily accessible guidance for primary care medical providers related to the prevention, diagnosis, and management of hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection, including hepatocellular carcinoma surveillance.

Hepatitis C Treatment

The American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases (AASLD) and the Infectious Disease Society of America (IDSA) in partnership with the HCV Guidance Panel (the panel) have created an online resource to facilitate easier and faster access to HCV Guidance: Recommendations for Testing, Managing, and Treating Hepatitis C. The panel regularly updates the website as new information becomes available, making it a great resource for rapid identification and dissemination of evidence-based, expert-developed recommendations for hepatitis C management.
