SMART Vaccine Tool

Design of SMART Vaccines

Goal 1 of the National Vaccine Plan calls for the development of new and improved vaccines. As part of that effort, the US Government through NVPO was charged with  developing a list of needed vaccines and ranking them based on public health need. As a step toward achieving this objective, in late 2010 the NVPO commissioned the Institute of Medicine (IOM) to produce a framework for identifying and prioritizing new preventive vaccines for development.

The creation of this framework has been carried out in two phases:

Phase 1: An IOM committee developed a multi-attribute utility model and associated software blueprint called SMART Vaccines exit disclaimer icon an abbreviation for Strategic Multi-Attribute Ranking Tool for Vaccines.

Phase 2: The committee created software and wrote a report which was released September 30 and is available for free for download: Ranking Vaccines: A Prioritization Software Tool exit disclaimer icon
