President Barack Obama's FY 2011 budget request for HRSA includes an increase of $290 million for health centers, which would raise the program's annual budget to almost $2.5 billion.
The budget also would increase funds for the Ryan White HIV/AIDS program by $40 million, the National Health Service Corps by $27 million, and Maternal and Child Health programs by $23 million.
In response to a reporter's question at HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius' press conference Feb.1 to announce the budget, HRSA Administrator Mary Wakefield explained that a portion of the additional health center funds will be used to fund 25 new health centers and to expand behavioral health services at 125 current health centers.
If approved by Congress, the President's request would allow health centers in FY 2011 to serve more than 20 million patients, an increase of more than 3 million patients above the number served in FY 2008.
