U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius today announced the availability of $5 million in funding to support the creation of the Prevention Center for Healthy Weight. The Center will lead national efforts to develop and share promising community-based and clinical interventions to prevent and treat obesity for children and families. This investment is part of the Prevention and Public Health Fund created by the Affordable Care Act and will be administered by HHS’ Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA).
Through this award, a Healthy Weight Collaborative will be formed that will recruit teams that may have representatives of health departments, community-based organizations, and HHS and HRSA grantees. The awardee, working through this collaborative, will engage teams in a variety of activities to help states and local communities develop practical approaches that link public health and primary care to prevent and treat obesity for children and families. These teams will be overseen by the Prevention Center, which will be charged with providing them with ongoing technical assistance.
"Preventing health problems associated with being overweight or obese in our nation is a priority of the President for all Americans,” said Secretary Sebelius. “As with the Recovery Act and the First Lady's Let's Move Campaign, the Prevention Center for Healthy Weight, called for in the Affordable Care Act, will help develop and share our nation’s best community- and evidence-based approaches to prevent and treat obesity in our children and our families.”
One cooperative agreement will be funded in fiscal year 2010 for a project period through March 31, 2012. Any public or private nonprofit organization, including an Indian tribe or tribal organization, is eligible to apply. The application deadline is August 16.
