HRSA recently awarded $231,800 to North American Management (NAM), based in Alexandria, Va., for its Health and the Aging project. The project will provide training and technical assistance to increase the capacity and improve the performance of HRSA’s primary care health center grantees and other safety net providers eligible to become such grantees in meeting the specialized health care needs of the elderly population.
NAM’s Health and the Aging project will:
- provide mentoring for new grantees to enhance opportunities for partnership;
- improve grantee services and coordination of care;
- use analytic studies to indentify best practices for health center grantees to serve the primary health care needs of the elderly; and
- assist health centers in expanding the use of web technologies to improve services for the elderly.
“Many of the nation’s elderly are poor with a disproportionate share of disability and chronic disease,” said HRSA Administrator Mary K. Wakefield, Ph.D., R.N. “This project will improve health services to the elderly by our community health centers and other safety net providers.”
This award builds on a previous HRSA award to NAM’s National Center for Health in Public Housing which has a proven track record in improving the performance of safety net providers in providing care to economically disadvantaged individuals, especially the elderly.
“This award will strengthen the systems older adults find themselves increasingly reliant upon to manage their health,” said Assistant Secretary for Aging Kathy Greenlee. “This award builds on the ongoing efforts of the Administration on Aging to provide the services and coordination needed for older adults to maintain their health and stay active and independent.”
