The Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) today announced a total of approximately $285 million to 58 children’s hospitals through HRSA’s Children’s Hospitals Graduate Medical Education (CHGME) Payment Program in Fiscal Year 2017. The awards reflect an ongoing investment in the quality and preparation of the nation’s pediatric health workforce.
“CHGME funding enables hospitals to train pediatric residents to meet the needs of our youngest patients, especially vulnerable and underserved children,” said HRSA Administrator George Sigounas, MS, Ph.D. “It also allows hospitals to enhance their research capabilities to stay on the cutting edge of innovation in the field of pediatric medicine and patient services.”
HRSA’s CHGME Program funds freestanding children’s hospitals across the country to help them maintain their graduate medical education programs that train resident physicians and dentists. In academic year (AY) 2015-2016, the program helped train 48 percent of all general pediatrics residents and 53 percent of all pediatric subspecialty residents and fellows in the U.S.
During AY 2015-2016, CHGME funded the training of 5,017 general pediatric residents, 365 pediatric dentistry residents, as well as 2,998 pediatric subspecialists, including 167 child and adolescent psychiatry fellows. Hospitals participating in the CHGME Program also reported key improvements in patient services. In AY 2015-2016, funding supported the development of 1,124 initiatives to ensure patient safety.
“Annually, CHGME residents provide nearly 4.7 million patient contact hours in medically underserved communities and 62 percent of graduates practice in the state where they completed training,” said HRSA’s Bureau of Health Workforce Associate Administrator Luis Padilla, MD. “In this way, the program ensures health care is provided where it is most needed and helps states secure the pediatric workforce to meet their population’s needs.”
